It is time for our teenagers to get the chance to continually explore new cultures, try new things and meet others in a safe environment.
WorldShapers has over the years been offering a number of different youth projects, but this time we will be using our greatest asset – Diversity, in a way we have not done before.
WorldShapers is judged by County Council as “Outstanding” when it comes to “Diversity” and “Community Cohesion”. We want to take up on this challenge and give young people the chance to engage with different cultures in a new way, in order to break stereotypes, and combat racism. In this way we all learn new things.
Over the next year we will be organising a long list of workshops with people from Sri Lanka, India, Nigeria, Kenya, Uganda, Burundi, Rwanda, Zimbabwe, Sweden, Denmark, the UK, etc. We will be offering workshops to young people that they typically cannot find in their school prospectus or in their local youth club.
Last year, there were over 120 young people attending different parts of the Accelerate Leadership Training programme in Hemel. A number of the young people have got together to come up with a programme that excites them and their friends.
The Reclaim project will consist of workshops at schools, during holiday times and will also offer a number of accredited awards if interested.
Young people will be able to work towards an award during half term week in dance, sports, arts, Literacy or Numeracy Leaders Award, etc. We have become accredited by Sports Leaders UK, Arts Awards, ASDAN, etc to be able to offer a great variety of awards for those interested. Others can just take part in the workshop. There is no pressure.
Workshops could include African Dancing and Drumming, African or Asian cooking, film making, guitar playing, forest skills, alternative sports and games, script writing. It will also be possible to take part in activities discussing how to survive the genocide in Rwanda or a civil war in Sri Lanka with young people who have lived through the most horrific situations around the world. We are especially looking for partnership with Extended Schools, Youth Clubs, faith groups and groups of young people who would like to try something a bit different. We can offer taster sessions, accredited courses, workshops, events, discussion groups, etc. All activities are free.
