IgniteCould you imagine a school that is not overcrowded with people, full of noise and distractions? The Ignite School is for 13 – 16 year olds who have given up on normal education. Our learners are referred to us from the Special Educational Needs (SEN) team and we are registered as an independent special needs school dealing with Emotional and Behaviour Difficulties (EBD).
Academically the focus of the learners for 2008-2009 is on four different GSCEs in ICT and Media. They will also be working towards a GCSE equivalent ASDAN award in Certificate in Personal Effectiveness.
Learners will be taught in small groups and they will be part of their personal target setting on a monthly basis. The school has developed a reward system that is based around the needs of employers, e.g. being on time, team work, personal presentation, finishing a tasks, etc. Reward points cannot be taken away from a learner, but there are sanctions for bad behaviour.
The philosophy of Ignite is to focus on the positive and what is healthy. Parents and learners are invited to a monthtly meeting where we are all celebrating the successes of the last month. We will share the strengths we have seen in the learners during the last month and the learners will have made a meal for all to enjoy.
At Ignite we have also developed a Vital Skills Curriculum that focuses on learning many of the different, crucial skills to be able to function independently and interdependently, as a family and in the community. These skills include business skills, DIY, how to develop lasting relationships, cultural awareness, etc.
One of the aims of the school is to empower learners to take responsibility for their lives and learning.
